Baseball Field Enhancements Many in 2010
 - compressed.jpg)
The Diamond Club has provided many very nice enhancements to the baseball field this spring and summer. Enhancements include bleachers, a flag, netting to knock down more foul balls, and most recently - resurfacing of the batting cages that includes a large area for tee and toss hitting. The Diamond Club will continue to provide additional enhancements this fall that will include a sprinkler system to manually water the infield dirt. Future enhancements also include additional storage and a scoreboard.

Prediction of Contending Teams
- Conference: 2009 State Tournament Runner-Up Stillwater and Cretin-Derham Hall are preseason conference favorites. Likely good balance throughout the rest of the conference. New school
- Section 4AAA: Cretin-Derham Hall, Mahtomedi,
Season Outlook
Sixteen players graduated in 2009; many of whom contributed significant playing time, including Lions All-Star and All-State HM player Ian Goldsmith, All-State HM players Jesse Nickols and Andy Osborne, and All-Conference player David Freed.
With the 2009 graduation of so many players, we're looking forward to a great deal of competition for varsity playing time this spring.
Key Players Returning include (alphabetical order):
- Tony Gazich: Captain, Senior, 1B/P, clutch hits for Mustangs in 2009, expected to be a major contributor on the mound as well as in the field in 2010.
- Nate Iliff: Senior, P, 14 IP in 2009 - the most of any returning pitcher.
- Kyle Mauricio: Senior, C, .310 BA and 10 SB's in 2009. Played in 16 of the 22 games in 2009.
- Jay Porten: Captain, Senior, SS/P, Played great defense in 2009 at SS - didn't commit first error until midway through the 2009 season. Started 21 of the 22 games in 2009.
- Billy Turner: Captain, Senior, P/1B, injured in 2009, hard throwing RH Pitcher, expected to contribute on the mound and at the plate.
On the mound, we return only 22 innings of varsity pitching experience, so we need some pitchers to emerge to give us the consistent pitching needed to give the Mustangs a chance to win. There are some sophomore pitchers that could compete for varsity time as well.
We expect to be competitive in what appears to again be a very balanced Suburban East Conference in 2010, and we want to play our best baseball at the end of the season.
We expect to see a number of different players earn some varsity playing time early in the season as they compete for playing time in the second half of the season and on into the Section playoffs.
Feature Story Possibilities
- Many baseball players compete in multiple high school sports at Mounds View High School; 34 of the 46 (74%) returning players are high school multi-sport athletes; including all 3 captains for 2010. We encourage multi-sport athletes - they learn to compete in other sports, many skills are transferable, they learn to play different roles on those other teams, and they experience different teammates.

Brian Deschneau is joining the MVHS baseball coaching staff this spring. Brian also coaches football and girls hockey at MVHS. Brian previously coached softball at MVHS and youth baseball in the community as well. He grew up in

Paul Nienaber, MVHS supervisory employee, will assist Coach Downey with the VFW team this summer. Paul played baseball at
In addition to Paul Nienaber, others planning to help out this spring with the high school season as their schedules allow include: Billy Gazich, Rich Opitz and Andy Peters. All have helped out in past years as well.
